Răzvan Neagoe
Răzvan Neagoe
Biography
Răzvan Neagoe, (he/his) art photography artist, (b. 1974, Bucharest) of Romanian ethnical background, lives and works in Bucharest, Romania, a city that has profoundly shaped both his life and artistic practice. Graduated from the National University of Arts in Bucharest, majoring in Painting, expanded the boundaries of his visual language to art photography. The city he grew up in is both an emotional and critical territory for his work. Its historical, aesthetic, and personal layers appear throughout his work, where photography becomes a tool for questioning rather than merely representing reality. The spaces in which he have lived in, the neighborhoods of his childhood, the rhythm of the city, and its constant transformations are ongoing sources of reflection, seeking to maintain an authentic relationship with memory, with the city, and with own lived experience. I LOVE BUCHAREST was one of the many projects involving this special relation with his birth city.
Artistic disciplines:
Process
A visual artist working with analog photography, painting, collage, and mixed-media interventions, exploring how memory, urban space, and the image influence one another. He uses analog materials, often old or expired, analog techniques and experimental processes to embrace errors and chemical reactions as integral parts of the work. Photography thus becomes a tool for reflecting on presence, time tracing, and visibility. In his work, the image becomes a site of experimentation, where errors, overlaps, scratches, and manual interventions are integral to the process of understanding rather than to be seen as mere imperfections. The city, Bucharest, with its historical, aesthetic, and emotional layers, becomes the laboratory in which he investigates the tension between the monumental and the intimate, between public space and domestic interiority.
Notable themes
Recurring themes in Răzvan Neagoe's practice include memory, time, and the urban environment. Adjacent themes related to the body, presence, and the relationship between image and materiality form part of his work, for example in *Body Scale, looking at the camera*, where the body functions as a unit of measurement of visibility. In projects like *Sinegrafia*, the analog image retains traces of degradation and process, while in *Grain from Bucharest*, urban and marginal spaces, using photography as a critical tool rather than a descriptive document.
