= an early 20th-century international avant-garde "anti-art" movement (c. 1916–1924) that emerged as a radical, nonsensical reaction to the horrors of World War I, bourgeois capitalist culture, and nationalism, rejecting prior aesthetic standards, embracing chaos, humor, chance, and found objects (readymades) to provoke, shock, and challenge established societal norms.
