Process

Artistic practice as a space for research, reflection, experimentation, and the renegotiation of various social concerns. A central theme of her artistic research is the analysis of the construction, narration, and politics of "folk costumes" or "traditional clothing" in socialist and post-socialist Romania—from cultural-political, economic, and identity-forming perspectives, while also taking into account exclusions and gaps. For this, she employs both art-specific, as well as cultural studies methods (textiles, artists' books, installations, drawings, photographs, screen prints, and/or texts, interviews). Exploring works with auto-fictional narratives. Works with a focus on the less visible facets of cultural constructs in order to enable other perspectives and narratives.

Notable themes

Recurring themes in Ulrike Ettinger's practice include artistic research and practice as well as essayistic texts on cultural and identity politics (inclusion, exclusion), clothing/artifacts, folk costume, original vs. copy, migration, marginalization, (non-)participation, classification or housing (as topics that personally affect the artist, her social and/or family environment); cultural resources and cultural studies research on the circulation of images, ideas, trends in fashion, design and film.
