Biography

Ulrike Ettinger, (she/her) visual artist, of German ethnical background, living in Germany as country of choice since 1988. Born and raised in Timișoara, Romania, where she attended the Ion Vidu Art High School. After moving to Germany, she studied art in the 1990s at the Muthesius-Kunsthochschule in Kiel. In 2016, Ettinger earned her PhD at the Bauhaus University in Weimar with a practice-based thesis on folklore fashion in socialist Romania. After completing an additional qualification, she is currently working as an art therapist.

Process

Artistic practice as a space for research, reflection, experimentation, and the renegotiation of various social concerns. A central theme of her artistic research is the analysis of the construction, narration, and politics of "folk costumes" or "traditional clothing" in socialist and post-socialist Romania—from cultural-political, economic, and identity-forming perspectives, while also taking into account exclusions and gaps. For this, she employs both art-specific, as well as cultural studies methods (textiles, artists' books, installations, drawings, photographs, screen prints, and/or texts, interviews). Highlights less visible aspects of cultural constructs and thus enables alternative narratives. Employs methods drawn from both fine arts and cultural studies (textiles, artists' books, installations, drawings, photographs, screen prints, and/or texts, interviews).

Notable themes

Recurring themes in Ulrike Ettinger's practice include identity politics (inclusion, exclusion), clothing/artifacts, folk costume, original vs. copy, migration, marginalization, (non-)participation, [[classification or housing which affect her personally as well as her social and/or family environment. In her cultural studies research, she focuses on cultural resources and the dissemination of images, ideas, and trends in fashion, design, and film.
