Romanian Queer History and Culture Museum
Romanian Queer History and Culture Museum (Romanian: Muzeul Istoriei și Culturii Queer din România) is an archival initiative of the ACCEPT Association in Romania dedicated to documenting, preserving, and presenting the history and culture of LGBTQIA+ people and communities in Romania, aiming to become institutionalized as a museum.
The initiative focuses on the preservation and interpretation of queer historical and cultural heritage, including documents, photographs, publications, press materials, personal objects, and other records relating to the lives and experiences of LGBTQIA+ people in Romania. Its work contributes to the preservation of aspects of Romanian social and cultural history that have historically received limited representation in mainstream museums and cultural institutions.
The museum is part of a broader movement to document and preserve queer history in Romania. Its activities include collecting and archiving historical materials, making queer histories accessible to the public, and contributing to research and cultural initiatives concerning LGBTQIA+ communities and their histories.
The Romanian Queer History and Culture Museum contains the following collections:
- The Florin Buhuceanu Art Collection, a generous well-curated collection of artworks from mostly contemporary queer artists.
- The Petre Sirin archive, a collection of hundreds of visual and literary diaries written by Petre Sirin, Romanian writer, diaries and documentarist (b. 29 may 1926, Chișinău – d. 3 april 2003, Bran, Romania).
- A collection of diverse queer historical items reflecting on queer life, covering particularly years starting from 1950, in Romania, from letters, photographs, scan of arrest documents, clothing, daily objects and others.
